This week in AP lit, we did two main things. The first being reading Oedipus Rex, and the second being analyzing the poem, "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time". Oedipus Rex was really boring to read, even though the story line was super interesting. Oedipus Rex reinforced the ideas that we learned about Tragedy, and allowed us to further understand the concepts behind it. It was bizarre to me reading Oedipus Rex because my preconceived notion was that tragedy is famous because it is something that can be applied to anyone. These ideas came to me from Tragedy and the Common Man. The situations can happen to anyone because everyone has something or someone meaningful to them than can be taken away. However, reading Oedipus Rex, it was weird because it wasn't applicable to anyone who reads it. Seriously how many people actually through a series of random events, end up having sex with their mother and killing their father? The chances are astronomically small, and I think it takes away from the play how unrealistic it is.
the poem we read was about seizing the day. I thought it was a good poem, and I enjoyed reading it. However, I thought that it was a difficult poem to read and analyze because of how un-interpretive it is. It seems like there is no room for interpretation, so it seems to be a difficult thing to keep talking about and analyzing.
I look forward to getting the tragedy unit over with because it is not very much fun.
