With the opening week of AP Lit, we were taught some interesting things. It was not like other classes where we learned about things and how to do those things, it was more open ground consisting of concepts about literature. Personally I really appreciate classes that are like this, ones that let you do the thinking and not the instructor giving you set in stone work expected to be completed in a step by step process.
We watched a video about Harvard students who talked about how literature is important. This was very helpful for me. It really got to me how important writing is. How can my "not so favorite" subject be so important? Well it really is, and I think that to be successful in college, and in life, I really need to learn how to enjoy writing better. It's a big step, and I feel that I shouldn't step into a university without this key understanding. The primary reason that I took this class was to open my mind. By doing this I should see a new found love for literature. Watching this video was super helpful to me because it helped push me in the right direction.
We also were taught the difference between commercial fiction and literature. Personally, I do no see a difference. They can both be meaningful, interesting, and filled with deep emotions. Who is to draw the line between the two? I could care less. I could care less about how anyone classifies any type of writing. In my mind, it's all good. I feel that there is no difference between the two, and my opinion is the only one that matters to my life. I'm not looking for an argument, I just choose not to believe that there is a difference.
