Tragedy is an important subject in literature. I do not yet understand what it means and how important it is, however I do have a few ideas coming into this project. I think that the purpose of Tragedy is to give the reader satisfaction. This is done a few different ways. Taking pleasure for someone else's misfortune is a common part of society, especially i wealthy countries like america where people tend to have more money and better lives. In German the term "Schadenfreude" derives from harm-joy, and literally translates to the satisfaction of others misfortune. I believe that this is a main point of tragedy.
Also, when reading tragic literature, I think it makes the reader feel better about their own personal life. It really allows them to sit back an realize how great they have it compared to the person or persons in the piece of literature. I believe that this is done subconsciously, and without knowing it, this is the reason why Tragic literature is so famous. I do not believe that a person will sit down with the preconceived thought of "I want to read Shakespeare because it is so tragic that it will make my life feel much b3etterthan it does now". Of course this isn't how it works, but this thought is really subcontious. I believ
Arthur Miller wrote an essay on tragedy in which he highlighted some more essentialo thoughts of Tragedy. He staed that, "I believe that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were. On the face of it this ought to be obvious in the light of modern psychiatry, which bases its analysis upon classific formulations, such as the Oedipus and Orestes complexes, for instance, which were enacted by royal beings, but which apply to everyone in similar emotional situations." He bring sup an interesting ppoint that another reason why tragedy is so popular is becuase it inflicts to anyone, not just high authorities and famous people. This is why tragedy is so popular and essential to literaure, becuase it is applable to anyone.
